Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Third molars, commonly referred to as wisdom teeth, are usually the last four of  32 teeth to erupt.   Some dentists or orthodontists will request the removal of these teeth as early as 12 years old for patients in orthodontic treatment.

In most cases, inadequate space in the mouth does not allow these teeth to erupt properly.  These "3rd molars" are so far back, should they ever completely erupt, they are seldom considered a functional tooth, are difficult to clean and are still recommend to be removed.

There are several types and degrees of impaction based on the actual depth of the teeth within the jaw:

Partial Bony Impaction: The tooth has partially erupted, but a portion of the crown remains below the gum and surrounding jawbone.

Complete Bony Impaction: The tooth is completely encased by jawbone. This requires more complex removal techniques.

Most wisdom teeth have very long roots and are close to nerves and the sinus.  For your comfort, IV sedation is usually recommended with this procedure.  This is a very safe and monitored anesthesia administered by Dr. Stein himself.  This option will be discussed in detail with you during your consultation.

Reasons to remove wisdom teeth

While not all wisdom teeth require removal, wisdom teeth extractions are most often performed because of  problems such as pain, swelling, decay or infection.  Removal for preventative measures is recommended just as frequently.  If impaction of one or more wisdom teeth is present, and left untreated, a number of potentially harmful outcomes can occur, including:

  • Damage to nearby teeth: Second molars (the teeth directly in front of the wisdom teeth) can be adversely affected by impacted wisdom teeth, resulting in tooth decay (cavities), periodontal disease (gum disease) and possible bone loss.
  • Infection: Bacteria and food can become trapped under the gum tissue, resulting in an infection. The infection can cause considerable pain.
  • Tooth Crowding: Impacted wisdom teeth can put pressure on other teeth and cause them to become misaligned (crowded or twisted).

Wisdom teeth consultation

We recommend scheduling a consultation prior to any surgery to have all of your questions answered and meet Dr. Stein. Prior to the consultation you will view an informational video about the procedure. You will meet  Dr. Stein who will review your health history, preform a thorough dental exam, review your panoramic x-ray which will show if your teeth are impacted and to what degree, and discuss sedation option. While you are in your consultation, our staff will contact your insurance to determine what dental coverage you have to apply to the procedure.  Before you leave, we will give you your treatment plan in writing with the cost of your complete procedure, the estimated insurance coverage and your estimated out of pocket expense.  We will also present you with finance options and discounts available.  Please Call 303-791-3232 to schedule your consultation & exam.
