Apicoectomy

What is an Apicoectomy

An Apicoectomy is a procedure that is recommended for a tooth that has already undergone root canal treatment.  A root canal is when the canals are cleaned and the infected and inflamed tissue in the root is removed.  When inflammation or infection persists after root canal treatment, an apicoectomy may be suggested.  First the apex (or root tip) will be surgically removed and then sealed with a retrograde filling to prevent further infection.

Reasons for an Apicoectomy

Infected and inflamed soft tissue around the root of a tooth can be exceptionally painful and debilitating to the patient. The purpose of an apicoectomy is to eliminate the infection in the tissue and to ultimately preserve the function of the tooth and save it from extraction. An apicoectomy will rarely be considered by the dentist unless a prior root canal treatment has failed.

What does getting an Apicoectomy involve?

A small incision in the gum is made to expose the root by lifting away the gum. In some cases, a tiny fraction of the bone may be removed to properly expose the root. The edge of the root tip and any infected connective tissue will be removed. The root will be sealed using a "retrograde filling" and Dr. Stein will then suture the gum with several dissolvable stitches.

Most Patients are referred by their dentist or an Endodontist to Dr. Stein who specializes in the Apicoectomy procedures.  A referral to Dr. Stein is never required.  If you are interested in discussing this procedure, please feel free to call our office for a consultation at 303-791-3232.
